Today is National Clean Out Your Computer Day, so the Dedred Coms team has put together some suggestions on how you can keep your desktop organised.

  1. Don’t just save files to your desktop. When you download files, make sure you keep them in dedicated folders.
  2. Keep your folders in order according to client and date. Make sure each is clearly labeled with each client or project name, and within that folder break down the data that will be stored into the year and month it will be used. This helps you track down files in the future according to when they were used and what for.
  3. Colour code! Using colour coordinated folders according to what sector they are relevant to can help you easily identify what they are needed for. Got a folder for SEO or graphic designs for a client? Make sure you keep them separated with varied colours so they are easy to keep apart.
  4. File things immediately. Don’t think you will come back to file them later, because you won’t.
  5. Use the search tool on your desktop to locate files, which leads to the next point:
  6. Use descriptive name files. That way, you can find files without dragging through your entire desktop.
  7. Experiment with sectioned wallpapers. Perhaps you can store your files against a backdrop that helps you to keep your files organised.

9. Schedule a weekly desktop purge. Don’t need it? Securely delete and Empty trash.
